First Multidisciplinary Meeting for MIS in Colombia
Report of the First Combined Congress between the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) and the Colombian Federation of Associations of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FECOLSOG)
by Gustavo Stringel, MD, MBA
The Congreso Satélite - Society of Laparoendscopic Surgeons (SLS) II Congreso Colombiano de Endoscopia Ginecológica was held in Cartagena, Colombia from June 1-4, 2011.
This was the first combined Congress between SLS and the Colombian Gynecology and Obstetrics Society. It was organized by Dr. Juan Diego Villegas, President of the Congress, and Dr. Rafael Padron Burgos, President of the Colombian Gynecology and Obstetrics Federation (FECOLSOG). This was the first multidisciplinary meeting for our Colombian colleagues.
The pre-Congress meeting academic activities included a suturing course in the vertical zone directed by Dr. Charles Koh, a single port hands-on course, and a Gynecological Oncology symposium.
The Society of Laparoendocopic Surgeons was well represented. There was active participation by many SLS leaders, including presentations by Dr. Paul Wetter, Chairman of SLS.
The multidisciplinary presentations included gynecology, general surgery, urology, pediatric surgery and other specialties.
The Colombian Organizing Committee designed an excellent scientific program with presentations in both English and Spanish. The instant, simultaneous translation provided a better understanding of the English presentations and allowed active participation by Spanish speaking participants.
The ORReady initiative, which is endorsed by SLS, was well received. Many participants were interested in implementing this safety program in their organizations.
The Congress was a great success and hopefully the beginning of many more combined educational programs.
