The Role of Robotics in Gynecologic Oncology: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly presented by Farr Nezhat, MD
The robot has many advantages. It is 3-dimensional, tremor filtration, intuitive movement, 90-degree articulation, and fewer assistants are needed. However, it does have disadvantages.
The Good – robots provide precision, lack of tremor, and better outcomes.
The Bad – surgeons may loose their orientation because they are too close to the organ and may grab the wrong thing. Injury caused by use of electrocautery may not be discovered right away. With robotics, there is a lack of haptic feedback.
The Ugly – Preoperative setup takes time, because the equipment is bulky with lots of cords, and sometimes the robot can malfunction.
